Nigeria: Maidurguri Airport: Boko Haram attacks

Many residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital as well as security agents were feared dead on Monday as Boko Haram insurgents attacked Maiduguri International Airport.
Witnesses said the attackers set two aircraft parked on the tarmac ablaze and also hit the nearby air force base.
In their hundreds, the insurgents invaded parts of the city, planting explosives and shooting indiscriminately.

Their targets included residential buildings, military checkpoints, the trailer park on Damaturu-Maiduguri Road, leading to an unspecified number of casualties.
Among them were a number of insurgents.
Soldiers attached to 7 Division fought back and succeeded in pushing the attackers out of the city.
Military spokesman, Ibrahim Attahiru, also confirmed the attacks.

The overnight attacks led to the declaration of a 24-hour curfew in Maiduguri.
The airspace was also closed to traffic.
Secretary to the Borno State Government, Baba Ahmed Jidda, confirmed the overnight attacks and the curfew.
He said, “The Borno State Government in consultation with (the military) has decided to impose a 24-hour curfew on Maiduguri.
