Alabama: Birmingham:Airport: evacuation on Nov 3

Note found in restroom prompted bomb threat at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth airport, authorities say

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – A bomb threat that shut down the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport for several hours Sunday afternoon was instigated by a note found in a restroom, authorities said.

Birmingham police are not releasing the content of the threatening note, spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. said during a press conference.

Authorities responded to a bomb threat at the airport around 4 p.m. and decided to evacuate the airport as a precautionary measure, he said.

Bomb-detecting dogs were brought in to sweep the area. Nothing was found during the search, and airport operations have since resumed, Williams said.

“We take all threats seriously and always thoroughly investigate any threat,” he said.

Police do not have any suspects in the case, but the incident could result in charges of making terrorist threats. Anyone with information about the note can notify the Birmingham Police Department at (205)254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777.

Airport spokeswoman Toni Herrera-Bast said the threat affected approximately 500 passengers and about 12 flights, which were delayed or diverted.
