Florida: Safe to fly again at Jacksonville Intl Airport

Oct 01, 2013

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) in Florida was brought to standstill for 5 hours today when 2 packages were discovered in the terminal parking garage. One of the packages had a “destructive device,” as police described it, although they would not explain whether or not that meant that it was a bomb. The police did report, however, that the device had to be taken away and “rendered safe.”

The entire incident began when a man refused to be screened by a TSA officer and then stated that he had a bomb. A second man began to run from the area, but was captured. The two suspects were cuffed and taken into custody, and the FBI is also investigating.

Airport personnel began to tell people to leave, and police blocked off the airport entrance as they searched the area for additional packages. Some passengers were taken to nearby hotels and were allowed back once the airport was declared safe so they could retrieve their baggage items.
