Madagascar: Travel advisory from UK FCO:

Local travel
The FCO advise against all but essential travel to Andohahela National Park and against all travel on road RN13 between Ambovombe and Ihosy. Take great care and follow local advice if you are travelling in the south east of the country. Armed groups (Dahalo) have increased illegal activity in Befotaka District (Atsimo-Atsinanana Region) and there have been numerous deaths. Most incidents are in remote rural areas, but some have been close to the town of Fort Dauphin and Tsimilahy. Tourists have not been targeted but the situation remains tense.

Where possible, travel with established organisations or travel firms who are able to monitor the local media and warn of possible trouble. Be vigilant and maintain a low profile while moving around the country, particularly if you are travelling alone.

There have been incidents of armed robbery in some National Parks. If you intend to visit a National Park, seek advice from a tour operator or from the park administration in advance.

Be alert to the possibility of acts of disorder by elements of the security forces and avoid any actions that might antagonise them (eg taking photographs of them). Avoid travelling at night if possible. If you do have to travel at night, take care and lock vehicle doors.

Road travel
There are frequent armed robberies on main highways, particularly at night. Where possible drive in convoy and avoid driving outside towns after dark. If night travel is essential, do so with care and lock vehicle doors.

Road conditions vary greatly. Most main roads outside Antananarivo carry heavy freight traffic, and have steep gradients and sharp bends. Drive with extreme care. In the rainy season (December to April), most secondary roads are impassable (except by four-wheel-drive vehicles) and bridges are often washed away. There have been a number of deaths from crashes involving bush taxis. If you have concerns over the safety of the vehicle or the ability of the driver, use alternative transport.

If you wish to drive in Madagascar you will need to get an International Driving Permit.
