Japan: Earthquake

Today, at 9:08 UTC, Japan experienced an earthquake in the 6.8 magnitude, 235 km, 146 miles) south of Kushiro, Hokkaido. Another 6.1 quake followed almost 2 hours after striking off the coast of eastern Chiba.

Authorities issued a Tsunami Advisory for the northeast coast of Honshu. A 20-centimeter wave which struck around 210 kilometers off Kushiro prompted an evacuation warning for coastal residents.

No damage has been reported and the tsunami advisory has been since cancelled.

Aftershocks continue this afternoon.
