A weather disaster is unfolding in Fiji with Nadi flooded along with the northern city of Ba.

Nadi, which hosts an international airport, is the main centre for tourism. Many New Zealanders are there for the last week of school holidays.

Fiji is being hammered by a tropical depression bringing rain. Police said one person had already been killed – a farmer was swept away as he tried to save his stock.

Fiji Broadcasting reported that the Nadi River, which runs through the middle of the town, had burst its banks.

It reported evacuation centres were being set up in Nadi, while Ba was out of bounds as it was under nearly two metres of water.

Many other urban areas were experiencing severe flooding.

Just after 2pm the Ministry of Information warned of continuing heavy rain, thunderstorms and high winds.

“For those living in low-lying areas, you are advised to keep alert of flooding and to move to higher ground if flooding is anticipated,” the ministry said.

“Parents are strongly advised to keep a close watch on their children.”
