Travel Alert from Ottawa: China

TRAVEL reports: Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada have issued the following updates on the travel.gc.ca website to the following countries:

China – Exercise high degree of caution

The Summer Universiade is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen from August 12 to 23, 2011. During this period, Canadians should expect heightened security measures in the city but also in airports and train and bus stations, where passengers are travelling to and from Shenzhen. Canadians are reminded that foreigners must carry their passport with them at all times and present it to local authorities upon request. Canadians staying in non-commercial accommodation are advised to also carry proof of their registration, obtained from the local Public Security Bureau, in order to avoid problems.

Canadians should exercise a high degree of caution in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Violent clashes have been reported since July 2011 in Hotan, Kashgar and other cities in the southwest. The presence of armed police is visible.
