Northern Kenya
A police officer was killed and three others wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) near Mandera (north-eastern province) on July 27. The attack underlines the persistent threat of incursions by both militant and criminal Somali gangs along the porous border. In addition to periodic IED or small-arms attacks, there is a heightened threat of kidnapping. Persistent insecurity and concerns over migratory movements connected to the continuing famine have prompted the government to deploy additional police and military.
