Weather: travel chaos in the UK and Europe

AS a result of severe weather conditions, there are currently no departing and/or arriving flights at Gatwick. The runway will remain closed until at least 06h00 on December 2.

Passengers should not go to the airport and should check directly with their respective airlines for more information.

However, the UK MET office has warned of heavy snow showers for tomorrow (December 2).

Further snow showers and strong northeasterly winds will lead to further accumulations and drifting of lying snow. Widespread icy roads may also cause difficulties at times especially where melted snow re-freezes.

British Airways said that it is monitoring the situation closely, but unfortunately some of its flights my be subject to delays or cancellations.

The airline recommends passengers check the status of their flight on ba.com and allow sufficient time to travel to the airport.

Eurostar has also advised that as a result of the weather conditions and as a precautionary measure, speed restrictions will be in place on the high speed lines in both the UK and Northern France and as a result Eurostar services are subject to delays of up to 30 minutes.

In Germany, Frankfurt Airport has issued a notice saying that as a result of the current weather conditions there are irregularities in air traffic and cancellations of flights. Edinburgh Airport is also expected to remain closed until at least 18h00.
