Major unions in Greece have announced plans to wage a general strike on July 16 to protest a new government scheme to slash civil service jobs in an effort to secure EU-IMF loans.
“An emergency meeting of the executive committee has decided to call a 24-hour general strike on July 16” in response to a government bill to maintain the layoffs, leading union GSEE announced in a Wednesday statement.
The development came after the Greek government submitted a draft bill to the parliament on Tuesday, detailing the redeployment of civil servants, a move that has incited widespread protests.
This is while Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras has reportedly stated that the parliament must pass the bill by July 19 so that the deeply indebted country can receive the first installment of rescue funds from its EU-IMF bailout.
