Indonesia: Bali, Lombok: methanol poisoning

From Hungarian Embassy in Jakarta: Methanol Poisoning in Indonesia ?

Precaution Suggested
There have been several cases of poisoning in Indonesia from alcoholic drinks adulterated with harmful substances, particularly methanol. Locals and foreigners have died or have become seriously ill mostly in the islands of Bali and Lombok. Cases have usually involved local spirits (such as rice-based arak) and cocktails, but brand name alcohol can also be adulterated.

We recommend that before consuming alcohol you take all the necessary precautions. Drink only verified quality alcohol and only at reputable licensed premises, avoiding home-made alcoholic drinks. You should be aware that labeling on bottles does not necessarily mean that you are safe.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning can include similar symptoms as those of excessive drinking, such as fatigue, headaches and nausea, but with pronounced vision problems. If you suspect that you have been affected by methanol or other poisoning, it is imperative that you seek immediate medical attention. This could be vital in avoiding permanent disability or tragedy.
