She likes to combine a little activity with a lot of relaxation. He’s jazzed for the full adrenaline tour. How can they find a holiday that suits them both?
Luckily, in the active travel sector many of the tour companies give you an activity ranking on their tours. This may be from Leisurely, entailing cycling on level ground or not-too-strenuous walking. At the other end of the scale might be Tough which means you really want to challenge yourself, your skills and your fitness level on steep and challenging terrain. The tour companies give more complete details on their websites about how their rankings are determined.
Luckily, some trips fall between two rankings. Called “split grades”, this might be perfect for our hypothetical couple. An active trip could is split rated leisurely/moderate. There will be a combination of activities to please him and her.
A word to the wise: this couple might enjoy a trip which is out of a fixed hotel base (“centre based hotels” as we call them, rather than one with a lot of moving around. That way if she (or in fairness it might be he) would rather stay and chill at the hotel for the day and not partake in that day’s activities, it’s no hassle.
Which is another good tip about active travel: you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. Some people are “scared” that they have to participate in absolutely every activity but it’s not the case (some people even choose to sit out meals if they feel like a quiet evening alone).
Or, choose an independent tour out of a centre base and you won’t even have to worry about that!
So…there may be more flexibility than you knew when it comes to active travel!
