A line of severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain and damaging winds to the Hong Kong area early Monday morning, local time.
The thunderstorms brought around 25 mm (1.00 inch) of rain in 30 minutes. Wind gusts over 50 mph were also experienced across the city as the storms moved through the area.
At around the same time, a cargo vessel and container ship collided in the waters off the coast of Hong Kong.
Although it remains unclear whether or not the severe thunderstorms in the area may have been linked to the collision, visibility was lowered to under one half mile in Hong Kong during the worst of the storm.
In the hours following the collision, dry and relatively tranquil weather prevailed. Rain returned to the Hong Kong area Monday afternoon and is expected to continue at times into Monday night which could impact some search and rescue efforts.
