The Embassy wishes to advise American citizens about a nationwide “bandh” (strike) that is scheduled to begin on November 11, 2013. Bandh organizers generally try to prohibit vehicular traffic with certain exceptions (e.g., police vehicles, ambulances). Confrontations between protesters and motorists can occur, especially at major chowks (intersections).
The organizers have called for the bandh to remain in effect through November 20, 2013 (the day after Constituent Assembly elections). It is not clear whether the bandh will be effective for the full period, or whether organizers may modify the dates of the strike.
