Sadly today is our last full day in Italy.
The goal today is to get near to Rome’s airport. I wanted to take the back roads and possibly the Ligurian coast on our way back. Travelling on the secondary roads in Italy is always an experience. It always takes longer than it looks.
We came upon an EU heritage town, Pitigliano. It looked absolutely ancient, however time did not allow us to explore, so we’re saving this one as well for a future visit. We finally made it to the coast to the resort town of Porto Santo Stefano. S. Stefano is definitely a playground for some very wealthy Italians. Opulent homes dot the coast and huge yachts occupy the waterfront. Of course the huge Guardia Finanza boat was nearby making sure there are no financial crimes being committed.
There is also a ferry service here that goes to Isolo del Giglio. Darlene and I had a delightful lunch of calamari overlooking the harbour. Off to Rome where we had secured a room at the Courtyard Marriott, in the town of Fiumicino near the airport.
Dropping the car off at Europcar was a breeze.
The plan called for us to spend the evening in Ostia, a nearby seaside town dotted with restaurants and nightclubs, however the thought of a nine hour flight the next day prevailed and we called it an early night.
