Dubrovnik was known as a conduit between the Venetian empire and the Ottomans.
They remained neutral through much of the middle ages and prospered as an independent state. It was heavily bombarded by Yugoslav troops in the fall of 1991 through to the spring of 1992. Damages were repaired by funds from UNESCO and the European Union.
We hiked on top of the old city walls and had a great overview of the city. After a vigorous tour, we ended up at a lovely wine bar and sampled some excellent Croatian wines. I can highly recommend the 2005 Dingac Barrique, Royal collection. Then we returned to the ship for lunch and a lazy afternoon aboard on our way to Sibenik.
Dinner was served alfresco on the lido deck, at the back of the ship, under the stars.
