The U.S. Embassy in Quito advises U.S. citizens living or traveling in Ecuador of a possible series of protest marches and demonstrations throughout the country, culminating in Quito. Demonstrators have announced that they will be making their way to Quito, beginning on March 8, using public transportation or on foot. There may be disruptions in service on public transportation and on major roadways. March organizers plan to arrive in Quito on March 22, creating the possibility of large demonstrations and roadway blockages in the city, particularly near the presidential palace and other government buildings. Be aware of possible public transportation interruptions, possible road closures, and the probability of large crowds.
Even demonstrations that are meant to be peaceful can become violent and unpredictable. You should avoid them if at all possible. Be alert and aware of your surroundings and pay attention to what the local news media has to say. A reminder, for local emergencies dial 101.
