Thailand update: Floods fears ease as barriers hold

THAI officials say the centre of Bangkok looks to have escaped the worst of the severe flooding which has inundated other parts of the country, the BBC reports. Officials had warned the weekend would be key in determining how much of the capital might fall victim to floods. With another peak high tide to come on Monday evening, river embankments have mostly held firm. Around the outskirts of Bangkok, several districts have been swamped by water, chest-deep in places. The run-off from inundated provinces to the north is continuing to flow steadily towards the sea. Efforts to divert as much of that water as possible around inner Bangkok rather than through it have been largely successful. It will take weeks for the flood waters to recede and only then will officials be able to gauge the full extent of the damage.

Bangkok centre, where the hotels, main tourist sites, shopping centres and nightlife areas are located, has not had any flooding. All services (such as power and water) continue to operate as normal in these areas and both the skytrain and the subway are operating as normal.

Suvarnabhumi airport remains open as normal. We recommend clients to allow additional time at the airport for check in.

While there has been some flooding near the river at high tides, the main hotels located along the Chao Praya River continue to operate as normal and the hotel shuttle boats are now allowed to operate on the river as per their usual schedules.
