Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, will host the 2011 Pan American and Parapan American Games from October 14 to 30 and November 12 to 20, respectively. The events in the period leading up to and during the Games are likely to cause delays and traffic disruptions in Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Ciudad Guzmán, Lagos de Moreno, and Tapalpa as additional security measures will be implemented. Canadians planning to travel to Jalisco during the Games are strongly advised to register online, monitor local news reports, and follow the instructions of local authorities.
Canadians travelling to Mexico should exercise a high degree of caution due to a deteriorating security situation in many parts of the country. While most major tourist areas have not been affected by the extreme levels of violence in the northern border region, it is highly advisable to travel to Mexico by air (please refer to our official warning for the Mexico-United States border). High levels of criminal activity, as well as occasional demonstrations and protests, remain a concern throughout the country.
