Vancouver Sun: 4:10 am PT OTTAWA — Ophelia could bring hurricane-strength along with lots of rain to Newfoundland when the post-tropical storm makes landfall Monday.
An Environment Canada weather statement issued early Monday morning said winds were reaching a maximum of 110 km/h.
Ophelia was still giving “storm force winds occasionally gusting to hurricane force,” the statement said, but cool ocean water should continue to weaken the system as it moves northeast.
The entire island of Newfoundland is expected to receive heavy rain, Environment Canada said. Up to 60 millimetres of rain could fall in less than six hours Monday.
Waves could reach as high eight metres on the southern coast of Newfoundland, Environment Canada said.
Ophelia was rapidly moving towards Newfoundland, Environment Canada said, noting that the storm had picked up speed and was moving at 65 km/h.
Ophelia had been a Category 4 when it passed by Bermuda Saturday before weakening Sunday.
