A classic clash of air masses will bring the threat for gusty storms to parts of the Northeast today.
Portions of northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York, western New England and the St. Lawrence Valley of Canada stand the best chance to have a powerful thunderstorm this afternoon and evening as a strong cold front plows east.
Areas south of Interstate 80 are at a lower risk because of a dry, westerly wind that will prohibit the formation of thunderstorms.
Thunderstorms that roll through Bradford, Pa., Rochester and Syracuse, N.Y., Burlington, Vt., as well as Ontario and Montreal, Canada, could contain brief, but damaging wind gusts and large hail.
Storms that formed along the same front across northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Monday generated winds to 50 mph and hail to the size of ping pong balls (about 1.5 inches in diameter).
