Travel alerts from Ottawa – Chile, Uruguay (volcanic activity)

TRAVEL reports: Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada have issued the following updates on the travel.gc.ca website to the following countries:

Chile – Exercise normal security precautions

The region of Lagos in southern Chile has been experiencing considerable seismic activity and volcanic eruptions from the Puyehue volcano. Considerable ash fall and debris have blocked roads in the area and over 3500 residents have been evacuated.

Debris may also clog rivers and cause them to overflow, which could in turn cause flash floods and landslides.

The Cardenal Antonio Samoré and Pino Hachado road passes (in the La Araucanía Regíon) crossing into Argentina are closed due to ash falls and poor weather conditions.

Ash clouds are also causing disruptions to flights departing from and arriving in Chile, including flights leaving from Santiago to Argentina and Uruguay. Travellers can expect delays and cancellations at short notice and should verify their travel plans with their travel agent or airline.

Canadians suffering from respiratory problems should consult with a physician prior to travelling to the affected areas. Canadians should also monitor local media for current information and follow the advice of local authorities

Uruguay – Exercise normal security precautions

An ash cloud that has formed after an eruption of the Puyehue volcano in southern Chile may cause flight disruptions at the Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo. Travellers can expect delays and cancellations on short notice and should verify their travel plans with their travel agent or airline.
