Alerts: Indonesia–Mt Merapi: Travel updates from Ottawa

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada have issued the following updates on travel to:

Indonesia: Exercise high degree of caution

You are advised to maintain a high level of security awareness when travelling in Indonesia.

As a result of volcanic ash from Mount Merapi (central Java), international and domestic flights have been subject to disruption. Canadians already in Indonesia or contemplating travel to Indonesia should be aware that volcanic activity at Mount Merapi is continuing and this could lead to further disruptions to international and domestic flights throughout Indonesia, including Bali. Travellers should monitor the local media as well as relevant airport and airline websites for the most up-to-date information on flights.

Mount Merapi: Avoid non-essential travel

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada advises against non-essential travel to Yogyakarta and Borobudur. Alert status for the volcano remains at the highest level. The Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta will be closed until at least 20 November. Canadian citizens currently in Yogyakarta, Borobudur and Central Java are urged to monitor developments through the media and to follow the instructions of local authorities.

Mount Merapi (near Yogyakarta) has been erupting since October 26, 2010 (please see related warning). A large number of deaths and serious injuries have occurred. The alert status for the volcano remains at the highest level. Volcanic activity is continuing in the area and further eruptions are likely. Indonesian authorities have maintained a 20 kilometre exclusion zone in some areas around Mount Merapi. Those living within this area have been advised to evacuate. Canadians should follow the advice of local authorities. We advise Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to Yogyakarta and Borobudur.
