Aloha from Hawai'i
Four weeks ago, I had only been to 48 of the various States that make up the USA. Two weeks ago I enjoyed a fantastic time in Southern New Mexico, and this week I get to sample a little of Hawaii. The last three days I have been on the big island, and I am currently sitting and waiting for a flight to Maui.
Everything I have heard from people about Hawaii seems to concentrate on Kauii and Maui as being the gems. If that is true, I can't wait, as The Big Island has been fabulous.
Arriving at Kona Airport after an easy transfer from Honolulu, I was met by a superb driver who took me and my baggage the forty minute drive to the Fairmont Orchid. He was tremendous, and very informative and proud of his island, so by the time I got to the hotel I was somewhat knowledgeable of the local topography, geography, and climate.
After being welcomed with a garland of beads, I was taken to the Gold Floor Lounge on the sixth floor of the hotel, where Pamela the Lounge concierge made me extremely welcome, and showed me around. Fairmont certainly runs “an hotel within an hotel” on its Gold Floors, and personally I find the upgrade well worthwhile. The privacy is great, the floor concierges fabulous, and the private lounge outstanding. Breakfast is always excellent, and hors d'ouevres served every night between five and seven. I used a quiet spot on the balcony as my personal haven, and loved sitting there, whether eating breakfast, or enjoying a cocktail or glass of wine from the honour bar.
