ACCUWEATHER.com reports that Hurricane Tomas is weakening, but there is growing concern that the now tropical storm will regain strength and target Haiti later this week.
Tomas was a Category 2 hurricane as it battered the Windward Islands on Saturday night. Disruptive wind shear (strong wind shear high in the atmosphere) has since caused Tomas to weaken into a tropical storm.
The Jamaica Gleaner reported that Tomas had left behind a path of destruction over the weekend after it knocked out electricity, blocked roads in St Lucia and St Vincent and damaged homes in Barbados. Downed utility poles and trees on roadways are making many impassable.
Jamaica is meeting on Monday to discuss emergency plans for Tomas as it is predicted to hit the island over the next couple of days on its projected path to Haiti.
