The railway workers’ union CGT Cheminots has called for a nationwide strike on 4th November. The organisation is part of the Interfederal Transport Union, whose members are also set to walk out. As a result, in addition to train services, trams, metros, buses and air travel across the PACA region will be affected.
CGT Cheminots has decided to strike in protest against the introduction of low cost initiatives, which it says will affect employees’ jobs and lower standards.
“The low cost wave that sweeps through all modes of transport is threatening all sections of the rail network and causing the closure of stations and ticket offices. At the same time, this policy will have a negative impact on the quality of service provided to passengers whilst the costs will increase,” warned the union in a letter to workers.
The strikers are hoping that their industrial action will have an impact on decision making at the next transportation conference in France, which is scheduled for late November. CGT Cheminots are seeking “human and financial measures to guarantee the future of workers in the rail network.”
