Tropical Cyclone Gita is expected to intensify to category 4 in the next 18 to 24 hours.
Director, Fiji Meteorology Office, Ravind Kumar has advised all communities to be vigilant as a Tropical Cyclone Alert is now in force for the Southern Lau group
Kumar says on its projected path, TC Gita is anticipated to affect Southern Tonga and enter Fiji Waters tomorrow night and pass south of Ono-I-Lau as a Category 4 system on Tuesday night.
A Tropical Cyclone alert is now n force for Ono-I-Lau, Vatoa and Fulaga.
Cyclone Gita category 3 was located about 1090 km East of Ono-I-Lau and about 1140 km East-southeast of Lakeba at midday today.
Fiji Meteorology Office says close to its centre, the cyclone is expected to have average winds up to 150km/hr with momentary gusts to 205km/hr.
The cyclone is moving south at about 20 km/hr.
The cyclone is expected to track west towards Southern Lau,
Destructive winds are likely to begin a few hours before the cyclone centre
Passes overhead or nearby.
For Ono-I-Lau, Vatoa and Fulaga, moderate southeast winds, expected to increase to damaging gale force winds with average speeds up to 65 km/hr and momentary gusts to 90 km/hr on Tuesday.
The public are urged to monitor the situations as flooding of low-lying coastal areas are expected.
