Mexico: Tultepec Market (outside Mexico City): Fireworks explosion

TULTEPEC, Mexico – At least 10 people died and 60 were injured as an explosion ripped through Mexico’s best-known fireworks market on the northern outskirts of the capital Tuesday.

It sent a huge plume of grey smoke billowing into the sky.

There were reports children were among the victims.

Luis Felipe Puente, National Civil Protection Coordinator, said nearby homes were also damaged.

He said there was no choice but to let any unexploded fireworks burn off.

It happened at the open-air San Pablito Market in Tultepec.

Emergency crews were attending to victims and hosing down hotspots.
