Japan: Fukushima: Namie: earthquake

A strong earthquake shook an area near the east coast of Honshu, Japan on Monday, but it did not generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a preliminary magnitude 7.3 according to the U.S. Geological Survey and later downgraded to 6.9. It happened at 11:10 a.m. HST at a depth of 10 km.

While there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami threat forecast for portions of Japan within 300 km of the earthquake’s epicenter.
