Australia: Sydney Airport: High winds disrupting flights

“Friday night chaos for travellers at Sydney Airport as airlines cancel flights leaving thousands of passengers stranded after high winds force airport to operate with just ONE runway”

Passengers who had planned to fly from Sydney Airport on Friday have been left stranded after severe winds saw two runways closed by authorities.

Both the international and domestic terminals have been affected and only one runway is in operation.

Qantas and Virgin both cancelled flights early on Friday which created a backlog of passengers into Friday night.

Both airlines have said their services have not been immune to the restrictions placed on the airport by the weather.

‘We have had delays but we are getting every one through as soon as possible,’ a Virgin spokeswoman said.

‘Some flights have been delayed but some are on time.’

The closure of two runways at the airport has led to cancellations and delays of up to four hours, disrupting the plans of thousands of travellers at Australia’s busiest airports.
