USA: storms from Cleveland to New Orleans

As the storm system responsible for bringing severe weather to the Central states at midweek continues to move eastward, the threat of severe weather on Friday will stretch from the lower Great Lakes to the southern Appalachians and the Gulf Coast.

The greatest risk of thunderstorms with damaging wind extends from southern West Virginia to southern Louisiana. A few of the storms in Louisiana and Mississippi could yield a tornado into the midday hours. In Ohio, Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, only if the sun breaks through would storms turn violent in the afternoon with the potential for a couple of tornadoes.

Throughout the zone from the lower Great Lakes to the central Gulf Coast there can be blinding downpours, gusty winds and isolated hail. Incidents of flash, urban and small stream flooding are likely.

The storms on Friday have the potential to impact more than 35 million people along a 1,000-mile swath from Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
